Enjoyed this snippet. Music certainly does bring people together. Today in America the song “We Shall Overcome” with its gospel roots made popular during the 1960s civil rights movement by Joan Baez seems appropriate. Depending on the results of the election come November this may be superseded by “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” written by a group aptly named The Animals.

Your comment cracked me up, LLL. That was to ward off the crying that was my instant reaction. Luckily, you frequently make me laugh. Fabio found it funny too. Thanks for reading, commenting, and making us feel good.

¡Muchas gracias! Brilliant! I’ve just crawled out of the rabbit hole your writing created listening to the songs, lyricists and musicians you’ve mentioned! (Thanks to Spotify!) Music of the heart! Xx

Thanks, Betz! I hope you enjoyed the journey. Makes me happy you took the time to do that. Music I remember from your father is Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass.

Thanks so much for commenting.

Andrea, I enjoyed this post enormously. First of all, you remind me of our work in Mexico, late 80’ early 90’s. The people we worked with, all what we accomplished. IMSS, ISSTE, Alcides Consuelo…. I’m going to Mexico tomorrow.

On top of this, you gave us a great overview of Mocedades and Los Panchos ! I like the two a lot.

Hugs and kisses for the family

Thank you, Carmela, for your kind comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the post and it brought back all kinds of memories. It did for me too. It reminded me of all those times in hospitals, clinics, and health centers all over Latin America with you and other colleagues. Those were mighty fine days.

Buen viaje a Mexico! Abrazos y besos.

A fascinating piece Andrea, thank you! Coincidentally we are seeing Herb Alpert and his wife perform later this month in Rochester in a theater much like the one you describe. I also grew up with Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass being played often, and am so excited to see him in person. He has put out recent albums that are as energetic and hopeful as those albums we listened to so long ago. The power of music for sure!

That's lovely, Martha. So glad you'll see Herb Alpert and experience a rush of youth and sentiment. I see I did not learn to spell Herb Alpert while I stared at the record cover all those years ago. Enjoy the concert!

Isn't it wonderful to see musicians like that who love what they do so much!? You captured that special kind of concert when the musicians connect so well with their audience. What a joyful experience that must have been for you and Fabio! Thanks for sharing all that joy with us too. ❤️

It is! Their joy for what they do fills me with admiration and hope. No wonder they still perform at this age. Hope to be like that when I grow up.

As ever, thanks for your comments and thoughtfulness.

That sounds to me like an almost perfect musical experience. I love the passage of generations and linkage between them, the strong emotions of the singers that was expressed into their music, and especially the participatory nature of the event and magical sense of community that seems to have inspired. That is what music "should" be like! The familiar song, "Eres Tu" is so emotive and "rousing"—I immediately had to look up a translation of the lyrics...Thanks Andrea

You're right, Tim. It was what music, and a concert, should be like. Everyone felt goooooooood. I listened to "Eres Tu" also today. This time it was even more meaningful. Thanks so much for reading and commenting. Always good to hear from you.
