How fun! I loved listening to several of the catchy tunes-they are so upbeat and joyful!

What a great topic for these very warm days. I had not heard about the summer song competition. And funny that we both picked music for this weeks topic: great minds know what to do when the weather heats up! 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻

I'm glad you got a chance to listen to some of these tunes. I must confess "the research" for this piece took a while longer because I just had to listen to and select appropriate songs and then listen again.

Yes, funny that music in these hot days of summer (here at least) inspired both of us. Always a good topic :)

I became quite obsessed with this one by Quevedo (and Bizarrap) that came out in July 2022 and completely dominated the summer. Takes a while to build but the chorus is immense. https://youtu.be/A_g3lMcWVy0?si=HVea8qWBEmLBLvUt

Another big summer hit from 2022 that was everywhere - this one by Rosalía. It has a dance with hand gestures that helped it go massively viral on TikTok. I love Rosalía but this is not my fave - it is extremely catchy though and became my earworm for most of that summer 😅 https://youtu.be/YXuIMY67QLo?si=Teho_i_yCi45Vcnp

Thanks so much for both of these. I enjoyed listening to them but I have to say it seems like it's going to take me quite a while to seek out Quevedo's work and turn up the volume. I suppose it will grow on me once I get accustomed to it. Rosalia is a different story. Her music to me is more agreeable. Growing with the times, I guess.

I started listening to her album El Mal Querer back in 2019 when I started learning Spanish and didn’t really understand what the lyrics were saying. My Spanish teacher at the time advised me not to use her music to help me learn Spanish because of the slang used and her accent, and the fact that the lyrics are sometimes more poetic than comprehensible (like a lot of lyrics I guess!). But I listened anyway because I thought the words were beautiful even though I didn’t understand them. Now that I understand them (mostly, haha) I appreciate them even more, especially the many influences she weaves in, like words from Caló, the gitano language. I think she’s a genius

In my humble opinion, it seems Rosalia's and other artists lyrics would be helpful to learn vocabulary and expressions as long as one doesn't take the grammar as correct. My husband also raves about Rosalia so thanks to you both, I'll pay more attention.

Veredicto: 0 putos

Gracias. Estoy de acuerdo. No entendí casi nada. Me toco leer la letra y cuando lo leí no me gustó. Me pareció muy elemental.

Now you’ve got me curious. I wonder if he really could be related to the poet.

Maybe way, way back there they shared an artistic gene :)

The song of the summer from Spain hasn't made it to Mexico yet (at least, not that I have heard!). Catchy and fun nonetheless. Thanks for a sampling of Spanish summer!

Well, perhaps we listen to different sources of music that might not have these songs that a certain generation listens to. Just musing...

This is so true. When you walk by bars, it is remarkable how many of them play the same few songs, and it changes summer to summer. Great post! My ears are perked!

Thanks for reading and commenting. Enjoy the music and summer!

Such a sun-filled, summer post! Your writing is so good, it almost made me like twice about listening to reggaeton! 😄

It must be good if it made you want to listen to reggaeton 😄😄😄. Takes some getting used to in my opinion. Not my first choice but I'm working on it.

What a great tradition! Now though, with this year's Soleao, what are they singing about that distracts them so from the beautiful women who are trying their absolute darndest to seduce the men?

Thanks for another good story!

Good question, Nevill! I'm sure a lengthy essay could be written about the role of the women in these videos. In each one that I saw, as you pointed out, they are seducing the men. One was nearly pornographic. I wonder how women feel about being put in this "position" and if there is any backlash from viewers about it. The way some of these videos portray them, their one purpose is clear.

I enjoyed reading this piece despite its subject being unfamiliar, as I do not follow pop music (especially from Europe). But, it gladdens me to know that songs like these are bringing a tropical-tinged happiness and a sense of community to many.

Better that you keep thinking about the fun and happiness part and not listen to the current songs to which some I linked. It's going to take me a long time to enjoy those by Quevedo for example. Maybe another twenty years or so.
