Excellent. It was a worthy and well executed win. It seems finals are always a bit of a disappointment, because everyone is so cautious, but ball procession told the story of the many, many little triangles Spain executed so well! I am glad you got to see the Basque monument. It is new to me, and I am grateful to have seen it virtually with you! Sales of football jerseys are fast and furious here. Everyone wants a #10 shirt with Oyarzabal across the back. The Basque boy who made good! It is and was exciting! Thank you for the blow-by-blow!

I hope lots of people continue to buy the shirt. I bet people are still going crazy there. Another Basque boy who made it good 😊.

We could not have asked for a more exciting game all the way to the nail biting end. La Roja played adroitly and with sportsmanship ⚽️🥅. We were so excited and proud.

This New Yorker says thanks for the shout out. While we, of course, feel like New York City is the center of the world, as it should be, even we understand that a national event like the Knicks NBA championship series and victory (which, by the way, united New Yorkers like no other event since 9/11) could not compete with an international, global event like the World Cup finals. Believe me, you could feel it here. Almost every night, Times Square was filled with throngs of people as if it was New Year's Eve. This time most were wearing various country's soccer jerseys. Citifield was filled with Norwegians who had no clue about the game of baseball but rowed hardily in the stands. It was very exciting, even for us non-soccer fans. And Mazel tov to you Spaniards for your victory. No doubt, very sweet even though far from home in Reno, Nevada.

😆😆🗽As New York should be! I’m happy to hear that the Knicks’ victory brought so much unity and excitement to the city. Just what it needs now.

And I’m delighted to hear that enthusiasm pervaded the city in the World Cup. It must have been thrilling even for non-soccer like us.

Thanks for reading and commenting. Always lovely to hear from you.

I laughed when I read about your stop at the Patagonia outlet. Been there and the one in Santa Cruz. They can be underwhelming.

George and I had a wonderful Basque meal at the hotel further south in Carson City. Worth a try if you are in the area. Now I have context for the hotel and the Basque community.

Next time I’m in Northern California, I’m definitely going to the Patagonia outlet in Santa Cruz. After our disappointing trip to the Reno store, Andrés and Natalia visited the SC one. Natalia came away with quite a haul.

Interesting to know you went to a Basque restaurant in Carson City. Next time you go to one, you’ll be able to converse with the waiters 😊🇪🇸

Hooray for Spain's well-deserved triumph (we watched the game in our morning in NZ)!

What an exciting and memorable event for your (nail-biting) family to share together!

Umm...you had never in your life had a beer before noon—not even in Girl Scouts?

That's a classic quotation: "[because] I don't like Spain." How very thoughtful and informed.

But one's choice of team, and one's passion in cheering for them, let us confess, is mostly about raw tribalism undiluted by higher principles.

The whole day and stay in the Sierras were magnificent. I’m sure you can easily recall what that place does to one even if our trips were just a few years ago.

No, never had a beer before noon, especially in Girl Scouts because I never made it that far. I got expelled from Brownies for being a bad influence on the other girls. And not because of alcohol!

Alas, you could probably make the same comment about people’s political persuasions. Raw tribalism, not realism.

Thanks so much for reading and your entertaining comments.

Tim, I still have a photo of a few of us at Steep Ravine with our newly concocted 'Breakfast beer floats', using the only ingredients we had (beer and ice cream), while we waited for someone to go to the store to get some other breakfast food.🤣

Andrea Eschen's avatar

I recall Marc Brown introduced us to beer floats. Not my cup of tea of tea by any means but my brother sure liked them.

Viva España!! Me encanta q hayan disfrutado de la final en tan increíble compañía ❤️❤️

Compañía maravillosa, sí. Además me pudo explicar las tarjetas rojas y amarillas 😆.

What a beautiful description of emotions and viewership of the final 2026 World Cup football game. Congratulations Spain for a well earned Trophy

Andrea Eschen's avatar

Thank you, Salwa. It was a great day for many reasons.

What a fun write up of a VERY exciting day! We finally were able to watch a few of the last playoff games live and it was exciting to see whomever was playing (except of course when England lost.) But we were so happy that Spain was in the final and ended with victory!

FWIW, we have had probably a 30% success rate at the Santa Cruz Patagonia outlet over the 15+ years we have been stopping by; it so much depends on what is in stock at the time, AND if they are having an 'extra x-percent off' sale that day. But it is always worth a visit.

Enjoy your further travels this summer!

We were so happy too.

That’s two recommendations for the SC outlet.

I did well at the Reno one but no one else did. Too bad because we were ready to buy to celebrate our victory

Sabrina Simpson's avatar

Glad to hear you at least walked away with something! And I know that feeling of wanting to celebrate and getting thwarted in your intentions. At least nothing could take away that feeling of victory; that belonged to you.

Good story - yay for Spain!

I took the time to watch the World Cup this year and followed Argentina’s crazy wins, but by the time of the finals I was a Spain rooter and glad they won. Alas no nails bitten here.

Btw Looks like the sheepherders did more for the environment than we knew. They may have kept the large forest fires we now have from growing out of control.

Andrea Eschen's avatar

Glad your nails are still intact and you converted.

I agree with you about the sheep’s functions. In the hills close to where my mother lived in Northern California, the owner of the property (either state or private) rented goats and sheep to eat the grasses as a means of fire prevention. I learned that property owners all around the state do that. Such a natural, easy, fulfilling method benefitting all.

I avidly watched the game at home rooting for Spain and impressed by how well they held back the Argentinian team! Viva Espana!

Andrea Eschen's avatar

They played a great game. They had lots of shots on goal but that Argentinian goalie did an exceptional job keeping the ball out of the cage. Viva España is right!

Food and Fiesta's avatar

💝 I wonder if they 'hate' Spain and were rooting for Argentina because His Magasty had, only a week before, said he no longer wanted anything to do with Spain. Are they very MAGA out there in Reno?

Andrea Eschen's avatar

That’s a very good point and could likely be true. Nevada can go either way politically but there are a lot of MAGA people in the state. I attribute his attitude to inexperience and limited media sources. How can the political and economic situation in Argentina appear more favorable compared to Spain?

Food and Fiesta's avatar

They'll believe anything their orange lord says. 🤡

🤣👍😁
